Yes I understand what your saying. But the point that Im trying to make here and the entire reason why I started this thread in the first place is to try to get everyone to draw the connection between "Road Kill Skunk" and Ester Alcohols. I'm 100% convinced that the plant based Ester alcohols are the key to resurrecting RKS. Kevin Jodrey talks about this exclusively in the videos I included in post #1 in this thread. Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater guys just hear me out for two seconds before you dismiss what Im saying here. Cannabis is a very complex plant and there is a whole spectrum of terpenes and compounds that the plants can create. One of the lost "spectrums" of cannabis that is all but gone now are the Ester Alcohols that got bred out back in the 90s. These plant based Alcohols that the plants produce are extremely volatile and not limited to just one smell. Like I mentioned before there is a "spectrum" of alcohol based compounds that the plants can create and there will be different smells given off based upon phenotypes and other various differences. The original Skunk #1 from back in the 80s that you keep referencing in this thread definitely had these Ester Alcohols in the genes.

That original Skunk #1 from back in the day was likely pheno hunted by breeders. They went through many different Ester producing plants until someone finally found the one that exclusively produced the "pure skunk" Ester smell. No ammonia and no piss and no bleach or death just the pure isolated skunk spray Ester smell. Then they stabilized it in seed form. Now all this being said in order to resurrect the original RKS from decades back someone has to start finding old strains that have that Ester Alcohol in their genes. You gotta start pollen splashing various Ester specimens then start popping a whole shit load of seeds. Many of the progeny will have Ester smells like Ammonia and Death and Bleach and other volatile aromas but the idea is to keep hunting the phenotypes until you find one that ONLY exhibits the "Pure Skunk Spray" Ester compound. Do you get my point? This is why Im excited when I hear guys like Vegguerilla say that they found a "Eye Burning" specimen. It's because even though it may not be "True Skunk #1" and even though many people will dismiss it I personally believe that its starting to get close to the real RKS. It's just a matter of time before someone keeps fucking around with those Ester Alcohols and finally isolates it again.

I agree, and it's a cool and promising thing that the smells and tastes of cannabis are more than just terpenes. The more combinations, the more complexities the more opportunities, the better.

I of course wasn't there when Skunk #1 was created, but my guess is that it wasn't pheno hunted but stumbled upon. Especially if you look at the classic varieties that went into it.....none of them said "stinky". Maybe the Afghani but this was a time when breeders were primarily looking to cross Sativas with Indicas for things like "easy to grow indoors", bigger yields, hybrid vigor, early maturing, high resin content, and "best of both worlds"; grows like an Indica, high like a sativa. These were the prime goals of the early marijuana breeders. Pheno hunting came later, or was at least an early luxury.......my bet is that Skunk didn't come about deliberately, by looking for a combination that would smell like fine dank skunk......the 2 Golds and an Afghani must have been crossed to get the best traits of all 3. Instead of various traits of all 3 coming out, this amazing, unique new variety that really wasn't like any of them popped up. The skunky smell was probably a big surprise on top of the fact that this new amazing strain was made. And it was stabilized......mostly, I think.....

It had such an imprint on my memory. Even almost 40 years later..it was that good. Look how many strains have it in their genetics.

Yeah man for sure. If they stumbled upon it then they sure got lucky they just happened to cross 3 different landraces and the result ended up being absolutely red hot. If they were able to cross genetics and find it back then it leads me to believe that someone with some old beans and some luck could find it again now. Hopefully

The Dutch seed banks were carrying them up till around 2000. They were the only ones that could legally grow the "stinkin' stuff". Then things were being grown in Spain after that

I'm gonna dump some true history about my area's Skunk plants a decade before Skunk #1.
When I was in my late teens, we all drove the backroads and got high.
Late at night, you could drive down the gravel roads and it would reek of Skunk.
When the wind was blowing off the fields, your eyes burned like onions from the esters.
I'm smoking estered up Skunk as I type this. Lucky me! lol

53-year old tour head here—figure every generation’s memory should be recorded as much as possible. Skunky weed smelled like a skunk that had sprayed. It was stinkier than anything I see today. It was heaven. Absolute fucking heaven.

Skunk #1 was amongst the relatively small number of highly stable Dutch strains. It is in fact not skunky. Weird but true.

I don’t know but it seems to me that people are finding skunk phenos in crosses of Landrace Indicas and Landrace Sativas.

In opinion, the most insanely sublime skunk—but it was more than a skunk somehow— was the HP-13. In 1991, many of us had to flee tour. I went home to New York City, where I met my Lebanese boyfriend who had just gotten out of jail from being arrested at a NJ show. He was the third generation of a, well, Lebanese weed family in NYC. He was given one single little unrooted cutting. That was the HP-13. One shining ray of hope in a Positronic.
It was obviously a sativa cross. And it had obviously been the jewel in the crown of significant pheno hunts.
Not only does working with the landraces keep pure landrace stock but it also begs and beckons us to really dive into this extraordinary plant…

Been thinking on how ppl grew back in the 80s and 90s, and I keep seeing bat guano. You don't see much guano in grow inputs these days. Is there a correlation between this input and the super stinky weed of this era? Hmmm....

Im pretty sure my buddy said he got the genetics from William "NOODLES" Hayes. He would be 81 years old now. My buddy is 72. Im 64 YEARS OLD. For good or bad, I started smoking weed when I was 8 years old in 1966. My older sisters boyfriend used to get me stoned. He was 14. He also turned me on the Jimi Hendrix in 1967, and all kinds of other music. King Crimson in 69.

William "NOODLES" Hayes died in 2020 at St Marys Hospital in Huntington West Virginia. I live 20 miles from there in Ky. He did 8 years in prison for marijuana cultivation, and thats about the time the Skunk dried up as far as Im concerned. He also created Meigs County Gold which was a Skunk x Nl#2. Thats what his son says.

My buddy used to play in a band named Appalachian Mainline in the early 70s, and played all kinds of college gigs, and opened for Joe Walsh in 1970 at Morgantown University in West Virginia. My buddy is still alive and kicking.
He played in a band before that called The Outcast. One of the members. Ralph Morman went on to sing on Joe Perrys solo album Let The Music Do The Talking when Perry quit Arrowsmith. He also sang for Savoy Brown, Angel, and Bux. Ralph died about 6-7 years ago from prostate cancer. My sister went to school with his wife Debbie.

They had tons of cneeections for weed back then. Im also friends with Billy Ray Cyrus, and his brother Kevin. I play guitar, and sometimes jam with Kevin. He also plays guitar. Billy lived 10 miles from me when he lived her in Ky. He likes weed.

You're talking about the "Round House".
I played in a country band with my wife in the early 90's.
She competed against Paul Pace on talent nights. Remember him?
He wrote Dr. Dickel?

Noodles,
that rings a bell. Not very many out here know about Meigs County in the 70's and 80's.
I'm sure we knew some of the same individuals.
Most of them are dead now.

Last smoked true RKS in 1994. Remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. Skunk exists… RKS doesn’t anymore IMO, not the way it did then. It was pure, no well it’s kind of garlic or onion or ammonia, just straight up fresh dead skunk taste and the smoke smelled dead on, no hiding it. Grown by old heads out of the hills of Magalia in Nor Cal. That was a long time ago…

I found out on Thursday have a shot in the dark . One of my best friends daughter is hanging around with Chong and Afroman. I asked him to see if his daughter can talk to Chong and see if he has any connection to old skunk strains . .

Bros, I created an account after reading this thread. This shit makes me so happy to see, there's gotta be a fair number of like minded folks like me, who can remember the early 90s RKS vividly, just eye watering, call in the dogs mama!, deadskunkass reeking sticky fresh nugs. No plastic bag or bags would do, although the way it stuck to a sandwich bag was very nice, I would buy baby food jars for nothing and use those. I only saw it a dozen or so times, being young and in south Ga, but gaddam I miss it. I dearly hope you guys find some of those stinky mamas and we have a skunky revival of sorts before I get too damn old.
