Years ago we had a Walnut tree on the property. So many delicious Walnuts. Anytime anyone stopped by, I would hand them a paper bag, and invite them to take as many as they liked.

I recall it was the last tree on the property to lose its leaves. When it did, it would drop them all in the same day, sometimes all of them within only a couple hours. I was fortunate to catch the event several times. It was like watching snow fall, sometimes heavy, and sometimes lite. I think the fastest I ever witnessed, was inside of an hour, but my memory is not what it was.

I loved that tree. Now, sadly the Maple tree that stole the late afternoon Sun from the Walnut tree, is starting to really show signs of its age. It won't be much longer.

I grew up with those trees. The Walnut tree being around 100 years old, and the same for the Maple tree.

It is my belief that if either tree never came in contact with humans, they could've lasted another 100 years or more.

I'd much rather have the Walnut tree in place now, rather than the patio that sits in its place. I love my patio, but its not a giant elder with stories to tell and fruit to share.

I have a big black walnut tree next to my house... on years where it makes a ton of nuts, you literally can't see the ground when they fall by the hundreds. Grass barely grows in that part of the yard because the walnuts, and I think the whole tree including roots, secrete that sticky substance that other plants don't like.... it actually killed off a good portion of its neighboring crap apple tree. I looked it up, it's called Juglone, it's a compound that all trees in that family secrete. I have a big fence, and in fall, all the posts have piles of shells because the squirrels sit on the posts and shuck walnuts before they eat them, stash them, or go off to plant them for me to pull out of the lawn. It's a beautiful tree, but a real pain in the ass, not only do you get the walnuts to clean up, but also a million leaves, AND the leaves are all attached to little branches in groups, so you also get a million skinny sticks to pick up. Every fall I say I'm gonna chop it down, but of course I can't bring myself to do that, I think black walnut is pretty scarce in these parts and it must be at least 100 years old, probably more since my house is about 130 years old. I could shuck them and dry them to eat I suppose, but it's a real process... maybe I'll see if the Amish want them for thier baking lol. I shucked some one year when we first moved in... with bare hands not knowing about the sticky stuff... my hands were bright yellow for like a week. 🤣

Ive got one out back thats like 5 or 6 feet across at the base. Thankfully its far enough off the yard that the nuts and leaves dont fall in my yard, but the ditch and woods are full of them, i also dont get them in the yard cause my yard is so hard nothing tries to dig, not even groundhogs.

First; crap apple or crab apple? Not sure if typeo or local slam or personal opinion. 😝

Second: I have two large pine trees and a 10’ cedar hedge.

Pine needles. Pine cones. Squirrels (tree rats). Sticky sap everywhere. Huge bugs that come out of the trunk and ground every 10 to 20 years. (Cicada)

Cedar hedge has fine yellow pollen clouds come off it each year. Some years thick and heavy and covers everything.

Argh. 🤣

Oh yea...cicadas!

Seems we have less after the loss of the Walnut tree...

Yes, I still find unearthed walnut shells in my lawn and English Garden (my wife's garden of wonders) even now, and its been over ten years since we felled the tree.

I have several walnut trees, pecan and mulberry. Here the black walnut is treasured as gun stock material, yet they use only the roots. Seems like a big waste to me 😕
As for the locust or cicada here, they come from the ground. No correlation to any specific tree. It’s getting about time for the 13 year locusts to bust out. Two types, a thirteen yr and a seventeen year hatch. I could live without them but the squirrels find them quite tasty!

Good point CG, regarding cicadas and any tree correlation.

Only the roots...that is confusing.

Nice collection of trees you gave there.

This place has been homesteaded since 1813 according to the bench pins on the property and a geological survey. I’m actually enjoying the fruits of others labor and I am appreciative. I have added tulip poplars and fruit trees to the melee. Cherry, pear, peach and plums 🙂 I also have blackberries and wild grapes.

Haha, crab, but they are crap... pretty flowers in spring though.
Ugh the years with yellow pollen clouds about kill me... I'll be snorting Flonase like an addict 🤣 I also have 2 blue spruce near the walnut that you can't walk around because you literally get stabbed and impaled by needles. I had a choke cherry tree that I finally got fed up with and hacked down last year... damn thing was an aphid magnet in close proximity to my garden... so it had to die. Mofo that lived her previously made some questionable landscaping choices lol.

I wish I could grow more fruit. We do have one apple tree but I don't really take care of it, perhaps I'll spray and fertilize this year. We have a nice blackberry bush on the side of the house and plenty of raspberries and black caps down by the river. I want to find somewhere I can nab some wild blueberries to transplant.

Damn CG. You're killing me. Great fruit trees.
You and TSD with all the berries too. Very nice. Our raspberries produced some great fruit last season. Not very much though, as it was the first year producing fruit. Hopefully it will be better this year. Its all new to me.

Check out this wipperwill I saw coon hunting he wasn't scared of me at all
Just had a dove stuck in my chimney of my wood stove, got the pipe off and she let me pick her up and bring her back to her tree, we feed them every day, she found her mate again so we’re happy, we have 2 pairs alone one has a nest in our corner of our home (log cabin corner) even have a camera pointed at where they all eat with cardinals and bluejays, and squirrels and chipmunks 😂 we feed everything. we throw them whole peanuts in the shell and have a picky blue jay that will go shell by shell till she finds the ones she likes . then today we had a shit ton of turkey vultures out back

Don’t mind my wife talking in the video 😂

Hey hey CG what it be? Seein some Tree chat from the masters. I unfortunately live in a concrete jungle compared to you but recently removed 6 yellow bells and a cactus and a fruiting tree of some sort that wouldn't fruit lol
My plan is to get a Ruby Red Grapefruit, Arizona sweet orange, and early bloom early grande peach and plant in backyard. Today I've been powerwashing the concrete slabs and also cinderblock walls so can paint them. Then I plant trees and then get artificial turf for our pups 🐶
