I've done the exact same thing with ficus trees to get some bonsai material. In the bonsai world we call that air-rooting. I have a feeling it will work out very well for you. Just keep that soil moist at ALL times. You may have to prune away some growth too, as the new roots may not be able to support the whole plant. Can't wait to see your results.
I've always wondered why this method isn't used more often in med-herb gardening to get clone material. I have a suspicion the clone survival rates would be much higher.
