Can't you just put mesh over it?
thats helps but eventually the roots will plug the mesh
+1

I had mesh. That's what paint strainer bags are. With the orifice open and on the same plane as the side of the container, the roots didn't care. I had roots reaching to the reservoir before I started trimming them. That internal 90* elbow is a requirement I think. Simple hydrodynamics says water wants to equalize. That elbow isn't going to prevent that from happening. I just didn't find a clear design until, well, my tent flooded lol.

ya, i noticed few growers did it how it should be. Majority have it like how you have it currently.
Definitely helps with the roots not plugging the hole
The other thing I think would be beneficial is a larger drain. Mine at 3/4". 1" would suffice, 2" if wanting to veg longer than four months. On that note, there's a caveat. If you're wanting to run such a large drain, you might as well run RDWC or under current. Dutch buckets aren't that style of hydro.

i think 3" to 4" drain would be better

Funny how people compare very similar systems to current cultures rdwc.

When I built my shop years ago I went with floor heat pex tubing system and every new bubble wrap barrier or reflective type barrier material compared their new and improved insulation to dow Corning blue sm board.

I went with the blue board and 13 gallon current culture.

CC really built something innovative, or at least made it available to the masses. I dream of a UC system, have sketches and parts priced out. Just need to build the damn thing already. Like hell if I'm going to pay them their asking price for their four site system. Too rich for my blood, especially when practically the same thing can be built for half their price.

As for the grow, I'm gonna have to ramp up my res change out schedule to twice weekly. I've replaced the full 12 gallons through top ups in five days, whereas I was previously doing so in between seven to 10. Another downfall of a small res -- more work.

Picture time!! Thought I'd share some of the baby cacti this time. I'm questioning if the vendor I got the lophophora seeds from actually sent me all lophophora williamsii or if some other varieties snuck in. Some look correct, but a couple are a bit taller than expected. The p torch and b torch are both doing great as well, a little burnt from the light intensity but doing well regardless.

And the girls are rockin. They've been praying like crazy since I was able to get the humidity down to reasonable levels. Did a res change out this afternoon as well, so they're all topped up on feed and whatnot.

Oh man, they be movin' these days. 9 gallons of solution drank in three days. I'm gonna do a res change out this evening. Checked the res, and it was super cloudy and EC was through the roof, pH super low, and total volume sitting right around three gallons.

Topped up with six gallons of tap, got the EC back to where it should be, pH a little higher than ideal but gonna let the buffering ride until I do the change out.

Gonna have to be mindful to stay on top of it going forward, now's not the time to drop the ball.

Well, things are starting to get exciting. Trimming is gonna suck this round, but volume of product is always a good thing. Especially since I plan on running a sativa dom next round, will need enough smoke to get through the 13 weeks of flowering.

Leafs are a little droopy from high RH. I haven't set up the automatic draining on the dehumidifier yet, so the girls deal with 70% for a few hours before I get to it in the morning.

Frost is starting to set in, right on schedule per last run. Seems Love Stash starts to build trichomes between the second and third week of flower. Will do another round of defoliating this weekend. Work (and trying to find another job) been keeping me beyond busy.

Exciting for sure tohb, nice canopy!
My only bitch is I wish it were a bit more level. Even DFG says these are persistent bitches haha they do whatever they want. First time doing a scrog at this level though, so can't be too upset. Still gonna be a good pull.

had no choice, did another res change out this morning because site one flooded the damn tent again. Can't put the toothpaste back in the tube once it's out kinda situation.

Guessing it happened at first irrigation cycle this morning. Gotta stay on top of the roots in that one, site two is doing just fine (no flooding issues -- yet). Was time anyways, they're drinking an insane amount of water these days.

Frost is coming in nice though. Gonna need to defoliate again this weekend for sure if for nothing else than adequate air flow ability around the colas.

that sucks dude, hopefully it didn't do a big damage. Just suck it up and change the drainage to minimum of 3" and call it a day

Nah, luckily there was only maybe two or three gallons in the res, and the pump ran outta juice. If there were more solution in the res, it would've been a fuckall situation haha. Just gotta get through this round. Going on 20 days since flip to 12/12, so only like 7-8 more weeks of keeping an eye on it.

Will likely just make it part of the weekly maintenance, doing some root pruning in addition to the other weekend chores.

With the UC I'm planning on building, I was able to find uniseals for way cheaper than what CC charges (five pack for $26 vs $20 per). Finding a cheaper option was the prohibitive factor in building that system. So, now I just need to decide on site volume (thinking 28 gal might be too big for the available area) and confirm my thoughts for plumbing will work.

Not with how busy work has me right now haha between work and two young kids, I'm lucky to know the day of the week anymore. Hence going hydro -- it mostly runs itself.
