Most homemade edibles that fail don't fail in the oven. They fail before the butter melts: the weed was never decarbed, there wasn't enough of it, or nobody worked out how strong each piece would be. Get those three steps right and almost any recipe works, from brownies to gummies.
This guide covers making edibles at home from your own buds, trim or kief: decarbing, infusing butter or oil, working out the dose per piece, and picking a recipe. It is for adults cooking where home cannabis edibles are legal. The numbers come from about 30,000 posts in which THCFarmer members shared their temperatures, ratios and failed batches since 2008, checked against the research where it exists. Each step links to a full guide when you want more detail.
01 · Quick answer How to make edibles at home
- Decarb: bake broken-up buds in a covered dish at 230 to 250°F for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Infuse: about 14 grams of bud per cup of butter or oil (1 ounce per pound), with water, on low heat for 4 to 12 hours.
- Strain, chill overnight and lift the butter off the water.
- Work out the dose: grams x THC% x 1,000 gives milligrams, then divide by the number of pieces.
- Cook as normal, cut equal pieces and label the container with the milligrams per piece.
- Eat one small piece and wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
02 · Pick your path What you have and what to make
Start with what is in your jars. Bud, trim and kief all make good edibles, but they need very different amounts per cup of fat, and they suit different recipes.
| Starting material | Typical THC | Per cup of butter or oil | Best base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buds and popcorn buds | 15 to 25% | 7 g mild, 14 g standard, 28 g strong | Butter for baking, coconut oil for chocolate and gummies |
| Sugar leaf trim | 5 to 10% | 2 to 3 times the bud weight | Butter or oil in strongly flavored recipes |
| Kief, dry sift or hash | Far stronger than bud | 7 to 15 g, start at the low end | Coconut or MCT oil, capsules, chocolate |
| Fan leaves and stems | Very little | Not worth the butter | Compost |
Buds
The most predictable choice, because you can guess the THC from the strain and your grow. The cannabutter guide has the full method and a strength table.
Trim
Sugar leaf works, fan leaves mostly add green taste. In Good Recipe for Making Edibles with Trim, members put sugar leaf trim at about 10% THC and leafier trim nearer 5%, which is why trim needs two to three times the weight of bud.
Kief and hash
Strong and clean tasting, so a little goes a long way. Decarb them gently, see Decarbing kief for the first time, and see the bubble hash guide if you want to make your own from trim.
03 · Step 1 Decarb your cannabis
Raw buds hold mostly THCA, which does very little when you eat it. Heat turns THCA into THC, a reaction called decarboxylation. Members who post their numbers cluster tightly: 230 to 250°F for 30 to 45 minutes, with 240°F for 30 to 40 minutes the most common setting. A lab study backs that up: THCA converted almost completely in 30 minutes at 230°F (110°C), in 9 minutes at 266°F, and did not finish within an hour below 212°F (Wang and others, 2016).
Use a covered dish and a thermometer
Break buds into pea-sized pieces, not powder, and spread them in one layer in a glass dish with foil on top. Home ovens often run hotter or cooler than the dial, so an oven thermometer (around $10) is the best money you will spend on edibles. TSD's routine in this decarb thread is 250°F for 40 to 50 minutes covered, because the bud needs about 20 minutes just to reach temperature.
What it should look like
Light to medium brown and dry enough to crumble, like toasted herbs. Dark brown or black means it ran too hot or too long.
Too long makes it sleepy
Heat keeps working after the THCA is gone and slowly turns THC into CBN. Members who left a tray in for an extra hour, as in Decarbed too long, is it toast?, got the same verdict from the replies: a sleepier, more CBN-heavy batch, not a ruined one.
Do you have to decarb?
Not strictly, and it is one of the forum's longest arguments: Calling B.S. on "Must decarb or it won't work" runs to nearly 100 replies. A long infusion converts some THCA, but butter in water never gets past 212°F, where the lab study saw incomplete conversion even after an hour. Members who skip decarb report everything from very strong to nothing at all. Decarb first if you want to know what you made. The decarb guide covers oven, sous vide and slow cooker methods.
04 · Step 2 Infuse into butter or oil
THC dissolves in fat, so the next step is to soak the decarbed cannabis in butter or oil at low heat and strain it out. Pick the fat by what you plan to make.
Butter
The default for cookies, brownies, toast and anything savory. Unsalted is easier to bake with, as members explain in Why unsalted butter when infusing cannabis?
Coconut oil
Solid below about 76°F, so it sets well in chocolate, gummies and capsules, and it keeps longer than butter. Members use the same ratios for oil as for butter.
MCT or olive oil
Stays liquid, which suits drinks, dressings and dropper doses.
Clarified butter or ghee
Graywolf noted in Butter vs Coconut Oil that clarified butter extractions tasted much cleaner than raw butter, because the milk solids and water-soluble parts are gone.
How much
1 ounce of bud per pound of butter, about 14 grams per cup, is the ratio members quote most. One long-time member calls it the minimum for a decent effect. Two ounces per pound is very strong, and trim needs two to three times the weight.
How long
A slow cooker on low for 6 to 12 hours is the most common method in the forum. A double boiler or a barely simmering pot takes 2 to 8 hours, and a jar with a loose lid in a water bath takes 2 to 6 hours. Adding water to the pot keeps the butter at or below 212°F so it can't scorch. The crockpot vs double boiler thread and Canna butter recipes vary widely in timing compare the methods.
About the water
It doesn't "pull out the chlorophyll", as members often say: chlorophyll dissolves in fat. Its real job is to cap the temperature. The green taste comes from grinding too fine, cooking too long and wringing the cloth, so TSD's advice is to "only do one good squeeze".
The cannabutter guide walks through all three methods step by step.
05 · Step 3 Work out the dose per piece
You can't measure THC in a home kitchen, but you can estimate it well enough to avoid nasty surprises. The math takes two minutes.
- Grams of cannabis x THC% x 1,000 = milligrams of THC in the material. 7 g of 18% bud holds about 1,260 mg.
- Assume about 80% of it makes it into the fat. Some batches get less, but labeling on the high side means a piece is never stronger than its label. 1,260 mg x 0.8 is about 1,000 mg.
- Divide by the number of pieces. Put all of that butter in a pan of 24 brownies and each holds about 40 mg. Cut 48 and each holds about 20 mg.
For scale, 5 mg is the standard THC unit US researchers use (NIH notice NOT-DA-21-049), and legal markets such as California cap a single serving at 10 mg. The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction tells people who are new to edibles to start with no more than 2.5 mg. One experienced member calls 25 mg their mellow dose and 75 to 100 mg "just holding on", so tolerance varies more than any recipe does.
Wait before you take more
Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, peak at about 4 hours and can last up to 12 hours, with after-effects into the next day (CCSA, 2019). Taking a second piece because the first "isn't working" after 45 minutes is how most bad edible nights start.
The edible potency guide covers the full math, and How much thc is in my butter shows members working through a real batch.
06 · Step 4 Cook, portion and label
Mix it in completely
Uneven mixing is how one brownie ends up twice as strong as the rest. Stir longer than you think you need to.
Bake as normal
A 350°F oven does not mean 350°F inside the batter. While the dough still holds water it stays at or below about 212°F, so normal baking times don't burn off the THC.
Cut equal pieces
Use a ruler, a mold or a scale. Your dose math only works if the pieces match.
Make it milder without a new batch
Replace half the cannabutter in the recipe with plain butter and you halve the dose per piece.
Label everything
Write "contains cannabis", the estimated milligrams per piece and the date on every container, including the butter itself. Freeze what you won't eat within a week or two.
07 · Recipe ideas What to make with your butter or oil
Chocolate
Coconut oil or cocoa butter sets best. Follow the THC chocolate guide.
Cookies and brownies
Swap the recipe's butter for cannabutter. See the cannabutter chocolate chip cookie recipe and Kiwichick's coconut oil brownie recipe.
Fudge
Strong flavors hide the taste. Start with Quick & Easy Canna Butter Fudge.
Gummies
The hardest lane, because oil and gelatin don't want to mix. Eskander's Quest for the ultimate gummy works through texture and stickiness batch by batch, and Need help making oil, then gummies covers the oil side. A little sunflower lecithin helps the oil stay mixed.
Lollipops and hard candy: ninjadip's coconut oil lollipop walkthrough takes sugar to about 300°F, so have the molds ready before you start, and never pour hot sugar through a plastic gummy pipette.
Drinks and savory food
See the infused drinks guide and the sauces and dressings guide. For peanut butter, members infuse peanut oil and stir it back in, see cannabutter with peanut butter.
Capsules
Decarbed, finely ground bud or infused coconut oil in size 00 capsules has no taste and an easy count. A packed 00 capsule holds about 0.3 g of ground flower.
Trichome butter from clean trim
Covered in the trichome butter guide. Never cook moldy buds: heat does not remove mold toxins.
08 · Guide When a batch goes wrong
Weak or nothing at all
The usual causes are skipped or short decarb, too little cannabis for the amount of fat, or a short infusion. In Coconut oil potency disappointing, 40 g of trim in 2 cups of oil for about 3 hours came out weak. A few people feel little from any edible, as Edibles Ineffective shows, so if one person feels nothing and others do, the batch is probably fine.
Too strong
Don't take anything else. Sit somewhere calm, drink water, eat something and wait it out, because the peak usually passes within a few hours. If someone has chest pain, can't stay awake or is very confused, get medical help.
Grassy taste
Break the bud coarsely, cook for less time, squeeze the cloth once, or switch to clarified butter. Chocolate, peanut butter and spiced recipes hide what is left.
Sleepier than expected
A long, hot decarb or a very long cook converts some THC to CBN. Shorten the decarb next time, or save the batch for bedtime.
Butter made from undecarbed weed
In Decarb Failed, members suggested baking it into brownies anyway, because baking finishes some of the conversion. Treat it as a weaker, unpredictable batch and test one small piece.
Separated gummies or oily chocolate
Too much oil for the recipe, or no emulsifier. Use less oil per batch and add sunflower lecithin: members use 1 to 3 teaspoons per cup of oil.
09 · Guide Do you need a butter machine or decarboxylator?
No. A slow cooker ($30 to $60) and an oven thermometer (around $10) do everything a machine does. Machines save stirring and smell and hold a set temperature, which is why some members swear by them.
Butter machines
The MagicalButter MB2e (about $175 to $225) heats and stirs on a timer, but its standard setting is about 160°F, so decarb in the oven first (Anyone Else Try Magical Butter Machine?). The LEVO II (about $210 to $350) has its own dry and activate cycle, and one member in Infusion Machine which one and why? called it "sailor proof".
Decarboxylators
Ardent units such as the Nova (about $200 to $300) decarb in a sealed canister with little smell, as in this Ardent review thread.
THCFarmer has no relationship with MagicalButter, LEVO or Ardent and earns nothing from these mentions.
10 · Guide Store edibles where kids and pets can't reach them
Warning: edibles look like ordinary food
Cases of young children eating cannabis edibles reported to US poison centers rose from 207 in 2017 to 3,054 in 2021, and about 8% of the children were admitted to critical care (Tweet and others, Pediatrics, 2023). Almost all of them found the edibles at home. Keep every edible and every jar of cannabutter in a labeled, locked box, away from regular snacks, and never leave a plate of brownies out. If a child or pet eats an edible, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 in the US, or your vet, right away.
Don't drive for the rest of the day after eating an edible, and don't mix edibles with alcohol, which makes the effects stronger and less predictable.
11 · FAQ Making edibles at home
For a batch you can predict, yes. A long, low infusion converts some THCA, but water-bath temperatures stay under 212°F, where conversion is slow and incomplete, so results swing from strong to nothing. 240°F for 30 to 40 minutes in a covered dish is the usual answer. From Calling B.S. on "Must decarb or it won't work".
Yes, with sugar leaf trim. Use two to three times the weight you would use with bud, about 28 to 42 g per cup of butter, and leave out fan leaves and stems. Trim tastes stronger, so use it in chocolate or peanut butter recipes. From Good Recipe for Making Edibles with Trim.
Grams x THC% x 1,000, then divide by the amount of butter. 28 g of 20% bud in 250 g of butter works out to about 22 mg per gram of butter before losses. Use 80% of that number for labels. From How much thc is in my butter.
Most often the decarb was skipped or too short, there was too little cannabis for the amount of fat, or the infusion was rushed. One member decarbed at 240°F but infused for only an hour in a jar and felt nothing. Fix the decarb first, then the ratio. From Looking For A Canna Butter Method That Works.
Yes. Grind it fine, take out a spoonful of flour to keep the texture right and mix it well. It tastes more herbal and doses less evenly than butter, so cut small pieces. From I want to make weed brownies.
Months in the fridge and longer in the freezer. Leftover plant matter can mold at room temperature, and butter spoils faster than oil, so strain well and freeze what you won't use within a few weeks. From Cannabis Coconut Oil?.
No, but it will be weaker. Members suggested using it in brownies, where baking finishes some of the conversion, then testing one small piece before sharing. From Decarb Failed.
